“Numerous outlets report that in lack of medical face masks, using a scarf to cover your mouth and nose when in public is a good way to 1) keep others safe from any droplets emitted when you sneeze and breathe and 2) protect your face and nose from ingesting other people’s droplets.

However, please note – wearing a scarf is useless if you wear and use it incorrectly. If you touch the scarf and someone has sneezed or coughed on it, and you then touch your face or other objects you can transfer the virus. So, after using the scarf as face protection, make sure to wash the scarf before reusing it. Also wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds immediately after removing the scarf. (Of course you should always wash your hands when arriving home regardless if you wear a scarf or not). If droplets remain on the surface of the scarf those droplets can transfer to your hands, so wash your hands always after touching the scarf and wash the scarf so it is fresh before every outing. Always follow your health providers’ and governments’ safety instructions!”
